The Hands Behind It

Every Massimo is handwoven by a collective of women artisans in rural Colombia. Many of them weave from home, earning a fair income while caring for their families and keeping alive weaving techniques passed down through generations. Each hat carries the rhythm and skill of the woman who made it.

Why It's Priced This Way

Massimo starts long before the weaving does. In rural Colombia, the toquilla straw is harvested, cleaned, cooked, dyed and dried by hand. Only then does an artisan begin weaving it, strand by strand. The weaving and hand-dyeing alone can take up to seven days. From fibre to finished hat, the process can take up to 4–6 weeks.

The price reflects that time, the skill behind it and a fair wage for the women who make every hat. Small variations in colour and shape aren't flaws; they're the mark of the hand that made it.

Each Sandy Bottom hat is handcrafted using time-honoured techniques. A little extra care will help preserve its shape, structure and finish.

• Keep it dry. If your hat gets wet, allow it to air dry naturally in a well-ventilated space with the crown facing down.
• For light marks, gently wipe with a damp cloth using lukewarm water and mild soap.
• If the brim loses its shape, place a cotton cloth over it and gently iron on low heat to smooth.
• Store in its dust bag or box, upside down or on a hat hanger to help maintain its shape.
• Avoid prolonged direct sunlight or excessive heat, including leaving your hat inside a hot car, as heat can dry out and weaken the straw.

With proper care, your hat will travel beautifully with you for seasons to come.
